“I try to do everything I can to help my country,” Dobrobat volunteer Serhii Hromov.

Dobrobat volunteer Serhii, holding a shovel while clearing rubble during one of his site visits, tells his story of volunteering. It started in 2014, with the beginning of the war unleashed by russia in the East of our country. The man is a former military man, and after retirement, he did not give up the fight, defending Ukraine in the rear. In the first days of the full-scale war, Serhii did everything he could to keep the capital standing, protect its residents and help the military. He dug trenches, delivered humanitarian aid, and later changed his occupation to join Dobrobat and the urgent restoration of the country. Although his equipment remained the same: “Before that, I was building barricades and digging trenches, so I moved smoothly from one specialty to another. There’s a shovel here, a shovel there. There you dig trenches, here you clear rubble.”

Sergii helped the victims as part of the Kyiv and Chernihiv construction battalions. He learned about Dobrobat from his friend, a former Ukrainian consul in Guinea. They met when Serhii was living in Africa. They have been in touch ever since. And now, when she found out that her husband was looking for volunteers in Kyiv region, her old friend recommended the Dobrobat movement.

Serhii is a communications specialist and quickly learned the basics of construction and repairing damaged roofs in the homes of Yahidne residents. He believes everyone should help the victims of russian aggression as much as possible.

“I have Russian roots. But I believe that Ukraine is my homeland. So I help rebuild the country I live in,” says the volunteer.

Last year, together with like-minded people, he created the Museum of Peace in Kyiv and became its director. The organization aims to implement the ideas of peacekeeping in Ukraine. In addition, the museum promotes the education of young people in the spirit of patriotism and the search for ways to build a peaceful society. Therefore, Serhii can genuinely be considered a conductor of peace to every restored house.
